The Health Profession Assistant: Consideration of the Physician Assistant Application for Regulation, August 2012
HPRAC submitted The Health Profession Assistant: Consideration of the Physician Assistant Application for Regulation (August 2012) to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. The principle guiding HPRAC's recommendation was whether the application met a "risk of harm" threshold. HPRAC recommended that Physician Assistants (PAs) not be regulated under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA) at this time. It also recommended that a compulsory registry be implemented under the governance and oversight of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). It is hoped that the registry, and other targeted initiatives, will result in enhanced interprofessional collaboration. Please click on the following links to review the report:

HPRAC's 2011-2012 annual report
HPRAC submitted its annual report for 2011-2012 to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. The report summarizes HPRAC's activities in 2011-12 which included revising the criteria for regulating a new health profession under the RHPA. HPRAC also received two new referrals from the Minister requesting advice on alternatives to the mandatory revocation provision in the RHPA for the treatment of a spouse and consideration for regulating physician assistants under the RHPA.

Report on alternatives to the Mandatory Revocation Provisions and Treatment of Spouses by Health Care Professionals, June 2012
HPRAC submitted The Spousal Patient: Advice to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care for Alternatives to the Mandatory Revocation Provisions and the Delivery of Treatment to Spouses under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (June 2012), to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. HPRAC's recommendations call for changes to the language of the RHPA to expressly exempt the treatment of spouses by health care professionals from the definition of sexual abuse. It also calls for Colleges to make profession-specific changes to the professional misconduct regulations and/or standards of practice to prohibit their members from treating their spouse.

A Report to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care on Interprofessional Collaboration Among Eye Care Health Professions, March 2010
On March 31, 2010, HPRAC completed A Report to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care on Interprofessional Collaboration Among Eye Care Health Professions. Its recommendations call for changes to regulations under the Opticianry Act, 2001 and the Optometry Act, 2001 and for action by the Minister outside of legislation or regulation to promote collaboration among the eye health colleges and professions through an Eye Health Council.

Report on Interprofessional Collaboration and Non-Physician Prescribing and Use of Drugs, January 2009
HPRAC submitted Critical Links: Transforming and Supporting Patient Care (January 2009), to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, and the Minister made the report public on February 2, 2009. Building on HPRAC's previous advice to the Minister over the last two years, this report focuses on interprofessional collaboration, and the prescribing and use of drugs by non-physician regulated health professions and scope of practice reviews for the professions of medical laboratory technology and medical radiation technology.
